Pan American Highway 1889

The Pan American Conference 1889 invisioned a transport system between North and South America, it was concieved as a railway network. The idea of  the Pan American Highway as a single route was established 1923, at the 5th Conference of American States.

One hundred and twenty two (122) years later, today the vision of a Highway extending from Prudhoe in Alaska to Ushuaia in Argentina is not complete.  What remains to be built is fifty four (54) miles of roadway. This part of the highway has to be cut through the Darien National Park (Colombia) and the Los Katios National Park Colombia. The protected area is known as the Darien Gap.
